The Future of Advanced Air Mobility

Announced in 2019, the Vector marks Aerodyne’s entry into the eVTOL manufacturing businesses. The quad-fan aircraft, which is based on the company’s existing drone technology, is being designed for cargo delivery, emergency response, and possibly passenger transportation. The company says that it is developing the prototype in collaboration with an undisclosed Japanese company. Aerodyne says the Vector is a "drone" designed as a “point-to-point air transportation system.”

Aerodyne had a two-passenger mock-up of the Vector on display at the 2019 Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition in Malaysia. At the time the company said it was working on a prototype, which it intended to fly in June 2019. However, there is no word on whether or not that milestone has been met.

On October 16, 2019, the company completed a $30 million Series B investment round but did not specify whether on not this money might be directed to the Vector program. Investors included InterVest/Kejora Ventures, VentureTECH, Gobi Partners and the Axiata Digital Innovation Fund.

Timeline

investment

Aerodyne Group raised $30 million in a Series B funding round. However, it is not clear whether this capital will be deployed to support the Vector program.

test flight

The first flight of the Vector prototype was suppose to happen by the end of June 2019. However, as of May 2020, the Aerodyne had not confirmed this event.

program launched

At the March 2019, LIMA exhibition in Langkawi, Malaysia, Aerodyne Group unveiled a mockup of its planned Vector eVTOL aircraft.

Outlook

Our objective assessment of this program’s probable success.

FutureFlight assesses the probability of success for a new aircraft program by considering the following criteria:

  • Total investment funds available in proportion to the anticipated cost of getting an aircraft certified and in service
  • A company’s in-house capability (in terms of numbers of engineers, technical staff, and customer support teams)
  • The past experience of the company and its senior leadership in developing aircraft
  • The caliber and past experience of key program partners
  • Whether key aircraft systems have been selected and are available for use
  • Whether the preliminary design review has been completed
  • Whether the design for the full-scale prototype has been completed
  • Whether the type certification process has been formally initiated with an appropriate regulator
  • Whether the company has achieved a first flight with a full-scale prototype
  • The number of hours logged in a flight test program
  • Whether type certification has been achieved
  • The number of orders and commitment received for the aircraft
  • Whether the company has adequate facilities to begin series production of the aircraft
Our Methodology

Since unveiling a non-flying mockup of the Vector aircraft at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition in March 2019, there has been no update on plans to make a first flight with a prototype. Aerodyne also has not published a timeline for certifying the aircraft.
